Jens Voigt cut out

Jens Voigt winning the US Pro challengeBritish Rider, Daniel Lloyd, shows that with hard work and determination it’s possible to reach your dream.

Riding for the newly formed Cervelo Test Team, the season has started hard and fast for Dan with 4th overall in the Tour of Qatar, 9th in Eroica Toscana, a solid showing in Tirreno-Adriatico and a more than impressive 45th overall in his debut Ronde van Vlaanderen.

Recovery is all important for a pro, so in between a massage and a Zipvit recovery shake Dan turned his attention to 15 probing questions that given the chance we’d all want to ask (oh, we just did) when he probably should have been studying the Gent-Wevelgem course book one last time! Well, I won’t tell Gerard if you don’t Dan!

  1. You can ride with anyone from past or present, who would it be?

“Gianni Bugno. I’ve been watching You Tube clips of his races as it was a bit before my era, I’ve never seen someone look so smooth on a bike. ”
  2. Obviusly the best bike you’ve ever ridden is the one you’re on now, what’s the second best you’ve ridden?

    “A Principia back in 2003.”
  3. What’s the race you should have won – near misses or just dreaming?

“Qinghai Lake and the national champs in 2007, both really close finishes, if I’d have won just one of them I’d be a bit happier! ”
  4. What is the morale boosting item you hope to find in your mussette?

    “Nutella filled waffles!”
  5. Everyone likes going downhill fast, what’s your favourite descent?

“I don’t have a favourite road one, but there are some fantastic off road descents in the Surrey Hills near where I live.”
  6. You hit shuffle on your I-Pod, what’s the track you hope comes up top of the list?

“At the moment Kingdom of Rust by Doves or Ulysses by Franz Ferdinand, but it changes constantly.”
  7. What is your favourite après race beverage?

“Zipvit chocolate recovery drink, or in the off season a Leffe Blonde!”
  8. If you weren’t a bike rider, what would you be?

    “I have no idea.”
  9. What’s your favourite new product?

“Directly related to the bike it would be my Quarq power meter, but indirectly related it would be the new Zipvit products that we are using, I think they make a big difference..”
  10. Do you have a golden moment when riding/racing that you look back on with a smile?

“In 2007 I did Gent-Wevelgem for the first time, it was the biggest race I’d ever done, and the first time up the Kemmelberg I was in the top 10 and on Boonen’s wheel, I just remember the noise was incredible. Unfortunately I wasn’t as well placed the second time up!”
  11. And the worst moment?

“There are too many to pinpoint one, I try and block them out too! I distinctly remember doing a group endurance ride when I was about 18, blowing completely, taking a short cut home and just crawling the last mile.”
  12. Where is your favourite place to ride?

“I’m really starting to enjoy the riding where I live now more and more, on the outskirts of London and riding in to the surrey hills. There is great mountain biking there too. I also love the Pyrenees near Foix.”
  13. What’s your take on the UCI bike weight limit of 6.8kgs? Good for the sport or got to go?

“It definitely needs looking into, I don’t agree with the way they are going about implementing the rule on TT tubing for aero bars at the moment either. The reasons and even the rules aren’t clear, the dates for when this will be fully implemented are also unclear, despite the fact that for a lot of companies it’s almost make or break because aero bars are the only thing they do, and you can’t just change your whole range overnight, or even in a year.”
  14. If you could have one super power what would it be?

“An extra 200w or so would be good when you are racing with guys like Boonen and Devolder!”
  15. And finally, the debate continues, Shimano or Campag?

“I’ve never, to this day, ridden Campy! So for me it has to be Shimano.”

Thanks for your time and good luck for the rest of the season Dan!
