​I was just a kid, 22 years old and sitting at the breakfast table at the iconic Team Saeco’s winter training camp in Italy. Just observing the moment was a spectacle in itself, as Gilberto Simoni enters the room like a prized fighter, and that’s before we even do battle on the bikes. It was an interesting dynamic to witness, and one that stuck with me forever. I wrote this piece for Issue 5 of The Ride Journal and to this day I’m still convinced it’s not too late to turn pro.
